Leveraging the Digital Presence of Bangladeshi Youth for Skills Development
Digital Presence of Bangladeshi Youth
In Bangladesh, the digital presence of youth has become a powerful tool for both activism and skills development. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are no longer just for social connection; they are key spaces where young people advocate for change and express themselves. According to The Daily Star, individuals aged 15-29 make up approximately 27.96% of the total population. This demographic is increasingly using social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to express their opinions, connect with peers, and advocate for change. By the end of 2022, social media usage among the 18 to 24 age group in Bangladesh, increased significantly. Facebook had the largest user base in this demographic, with 21.7 million users. Messenger also saw substantial engagement, with 20.2 million users. Instagram and LinkedIn had smaller but notable user bases, with 2.63 million and 3 million users respectively. These platforms provide a space for sharing ideas and fostering discussions about crucial issues. This digital engagement offers a unique opportunity to integrate skills development with the online habits of young people, ensuring they can leverage these platforms not only for activism but also for building career-relevant skills. By tapping into the vast potential of social media, we can empower young people to leverage these tools for building digital skills that align with today’s job market, preparing them for a future where digital literacy is key to professional success. Through initiatives like BRAC ISD and Career Hub, we are committed to integrating this digital engagement with structured opportunities for learning and career progression, ensuring that our youth can thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
Leveraging Digital Presence for Skills Development
At the Skills Development Programme, a wide range of online and classroom-based courses are provided through BRAC ISD, designed to equip young people with essential digital skills needed in today’s economy. Simultaneously, Career Hub functions as a crucial bridge between job seekers and employers, offering guidance to support young people in aligning their skills with market demands.
Recent insights from a focus group discussion with Career Hub participants revealed a strong demand for both career counselling and targeted digital skills training. Participants expressed a clear need for courses that reflect their career aspirations and align with the evolving job market. This feedback underscores the importance of adapting our offerings to ensure they meet the current demands of youth and employers alike.
To better support young people, BRAC ISD and Career Hub are working together to create a smooth path from learning skills to getting ready for jobs. By offering training through BRAC ISD and career advice through Career Hub, we make sure that the skills young people gain match what employers are looking for. This combined effort helps them become more employable and ensures our programs meet the needs of the job market.
