  Promoting Skill and Productivity Enhancement for Resilience (PROSPER) This project works on a cost-recovery model, meaning that it charges fees, whereas STAR is completely free. Interested learners pay a fee to learn the skills they require in a specific trade. The trainees complete a three-month apprenticeship under a Master Crafts Person (MCP).

  Promoting Business Incubation for Small Entrepreneurs (PROMISE) PROMISE supports young entrepreneurs in Bangladesh to successfully develop their businesses. Its goal is to create decent employment opportunities through the establishment of youth-led enterprises in local communities. The PROMISE program is open to all business-minded young people in Bangladesh and also provides a natural next step for STAR graduates who wish to start their own businesses.

 Skills Training for Advancing Resources (STAR) The STAR programme uses the traditional apprenticeship (ostad-shagred) model to offer free skills training in Bangladesh’s informal sector. Apprentices receive six months of training under Master Craftspersons (MCPs), gaining trade-specific and soft skills with a focus on social inclusion. Launched in 2012 by BRAC Skills Programme, the programme targets adolescents aged 14-18 from disadvantaged households who have been out of school for at least a year. Developed in collaboration with ILO, UNICEF, and Bangladesh’s Bureau of Non-Formal Education (BNFE), STAR adheres to child labour laws and discourages school dropouts, aiming to create a skilled, employable workforce. Digital Presence of Bangladeshi Youth In Bangladesh, the digital presence of youth has become a powerful tool for both activism and skills development. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok are no longer just for social connection; they are key spaces where young people advocate for change and express themselves. According to The Daily Star, individuals aged 15-29 make up approximately 27.96% of the total population. This demographic is increasingly using social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to express their opinions, connect with peers, and advocate for change. By the end of 2022, social media usage among the 18 to 24 age group in Bangladesh, increased significantly. Facebook had the largest user base in this demographic, with 21.7 million users. Messenger also saw substantial engagement, with 20.2 million users. Instagram and LinkedIn had smaller but notable user bases, with 2.63 million and 3 million users respectively. These platf...

The Shift in Career Preferences

We have conducted a comprehensive Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with 125 participants from five Career Hub centres across Bangladesh: Khulna, Rangpur, Sylhet, Chattogram, and Cox’s Bazar. The goal was to assess their evolving career aspirations amidst socio-political instability, the challenges they face in securing employment, and their expectations from the job market. The participants, comprising fresh and unemployed graduates, have shifted their career goals significantly in response to changes in the job market. A key finding from the discussions is that over 60% to 70% of participants now prefer private-sector jobs over government roles. They cited reasons such as better financial rewards, rapid promotion based on merit, skill development opportunities, career transition opportunities, and inclusive work cultures​​.
